We just arrived at our hotel in Bristol. I'm quite pleased with the time we made, only stopped twice. The first stop was at a Wendy's/Sheetz/Krispy Kreme all in one building and the second a random Roanoke gas station so I could get a coffee, only to see a sign for a Starbucks at the very next exit. Whoever told me Salem, Va. is a small town with nothing lied times a thousand.
I learned to stop sending hateful vibes towards Virginia. It's really only the northern part of the state that is unbearably ugly and cranky. Driving through the mountains on 81 was downright breath taking at times, especially when we watched the sun set over the mountains while we were speeding towards our destination. The soundtrack to this leg of the journey was largely provided by XM 46 Top Tracks, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen and The Beatles sang us down the highway, and John and I thoroughly entertained each other with a rousing rendition of Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You." The music made the whole thing pretty magical.
State count on the license plate magnetic travel game is already up to 20. Dad suggested we keep driving until we see all 50.
Oh, and there was a big fire off the side of the highway, but John wouldn't let me follow the fire truck there. That's probably in everyone's best interest. My fish seems almost happy in his haven in a Sheetz cup in the cup holder and my father's plant is doing just fine.
People are so friendly down south.
My coffee that the man in Roanoke made fresh for me is starting to wear off, and I'm sunburnt and dehydrated from spending a day outside the library with a picnic from Subway and my lap top (nerd), so I'm going to charge what batteries need charged (cell phone, lap top and iPod...and the personal batteries, too) and cuddle with my boyfriend to gear up for tomorrow's trip across the state to Memphis.
Stay tuned!

I'm so happy you can keep a little bit of Shepherdstown with you via your blog. The mom in me reminds you to only go 5 miles above the speed limit in the South, and to always put on spf 30 in the morning first thing. Good call on the firetruck, though it must have been oh so tempting. --Monica
